Accessibility

What we’ve done, and where we fall short.

We would rather tell you exactly where SiteRoot stands than claim a level of accessibility we have not earned.

We want SiteRoot to be usable by people who navigate with a keyboard, people using a screen reader, people who need larger text, and people who find motion uncomfortable. We are not all the way there. This page says where we are.

What we have done

  • Text and buttons are checked against the WCAG AA contrast minimum of 4.5 to 1. The button colours in particular were reworked twice to reach it, and one accent was dropped entirely because it could not.
  • Every interactive element has a visible focus outline, so you can always see where you are when navigating by keyboard.
  • Links are links and buttons are buttons, so a screen reader announces them correctly and middle-click and open-in-new-tab behave as expected.
  • Expandable sections, like the questions on the home page, use the browser's own disclosure element rather than a custom widget, so keyboard and screen reader support come for free.
  • Most images carry alternative text, and images that are decoration are hidden from screen readers rather than read aloud.
  • The page language is declared, and the site works in both light and dark themes at the same contrast levels.

Where we fall short

These are known, and they are ours to fix rather than caveats we are hiding behind.

  • Reduced motion is only partly honoured. If you have asked your device for less motion, our CSS animations respect that, but some animations driven by JavaScript still play. We are removing most of that motion anyway.
  • A few images inside the site editor do not have alternative text yet.
  • We have not had an independent accessibility audit, and we have not done formal testing with screen reader users. So we are not claiming WCAG 2.2 AA conformance, only that we build to it and check as we go.
  • SiteRoot is in pilot and changes often. Something that was accessible last month can regress, which is part of why we would like to hear from you.

The websites SiteRoot builds

This statement covers SiteRoot itself, the site you are reading and the editor you sign in to. The websites SiteRoot builds for customers are a separate question.

We build those on the same principles, with real headings, alternative text on images and colour combinations that meet contrast minimums. But a published site is yours, and you can change it in ways we cannot check. If accessibility matters for your business, and for many it is a legal obligation, tell us and we will help you get it right.

Tell us when we get it wrong

If something on SiteRoot is difficult or impossible to use, we want to know, and a specific report helps more than a general one. What you were trying to do, what got in the way, and what you were using.

Email us about accessibility and a person will read it. We will tell you what we can fix and when.

This statement was last reviewed on 5 September 2026. It describes SiteRoot as it is today, not as we intend it to be, and we update it when either changes.
